Sicily’s second largest town after Palermo lies at the foot of Mount Etna, a still active volcano. Many of Catania's attractive buildings date from the reconstruction that followed a devastating earthquake in 1693. One of Catania's most handsome squares is the Piazza del Duomo, surrounded by fine baroque structures and dominated by the 18th-century cathedral. Inside lies the tomb of the city's famous native son, composer Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835).
The most rewarding excursion from Catania is to the storybook village of Taormina.

Pier Information. The commercial port is approximately 1.5 miles to the center of town. Taxis are available. Establish the fare first.
Shopping. Shop along Via Etnea and Corso Italia for local handicrafts, including ceramics and puppets in medieval costumes, as well as Italian fashions, leather articles and shoes.

Cuisine. Try Sicilian specialties such as Spaghetti alla Norma, made with fresh pasta, basil, eggplant and tomatoes. Other typical dishes include pasta with shelled prawns or spaghetti with a spicy sauce of pine nuts, fennel, spices, and chopped sardines. For dessert, try cassata, a mix of sponge cake, ricotta cheese and candied fruit.
Other Sights
Bellini Gardens. Located at the north end of Via Etnea, these gardens offer fine views and a tranquil enclave.
Civic Museum. In the 13th-century Castello Ursino, the museum features Greek sculptures.
Bellini Museum. At the bottom of Via Crociferi stands the house where the composer Vincenzo Bellini was born in 1801.
Roman Theater. The complex was erected on the site of an earlier Greek theater.
